Teachers day — Freja’s blog:)

Thursday, it was Teachers day, a day where the teachers get celebrated by the school and the students. If you ask the schoolkids about this day, there are a lot of different opinions about the day. Some of the children like the day, and are excited to prepare something for the teachers. Some think it’s fine, and just do it, and there are even some who don’t see why they should do it. I think it is a great idea, because the teachers do so many things for their class and for the school, so why shouldn’t they be celebrated?

In the beginning, I didn’t know that it was an international celebration day. I only thought that some schools did it, but not the whole of Russia.  The reason for this is that we don’t celebrate this day in Denmark. I think we should do it, because it is a great concept. It is not because we treat our teachers bad in Denmark and sometimes we are also buying gifts for our teachers. This is mostly in the end of the school year, to say thank you for the year, but this is not every year or any tradition at all.

I was so lucky to experience Teachers day as a teacher here in Russia. What is not to like when there is cake at the office and a nice gift too? So thank you, and I hope that all teachers had a nice day!

The Robot exhibition — Freja’s blog:)

Tuesday evening it was time to experience some new things, therefore my friend Alyona and I went to the Robot exhibition “The city of Robots”. In the exhibition, there are different types of robots from around the world (even Denmark). There is small robots and robots with the size of a human. Some is made with a purpose and other is just made to show how good a technology we have. Moreover, they also have virtual reality glasses, that you can try.

As you enter the exhibition the first thing you see is the Star Wars “corner”. Here you can try a cape, use a lightsaber, be Darth Vader or say hi to R2-D2. Afterwards, you can just walk around the hall between the stands and maybe stop to try or hear more about the robot. Some of the robots you could talk to in either Russian or English, and they would answer your question. These robots also had a camera so they could see what people were doing in front of them, and then they would comment the actions. It was even possible to try to move the robot with a controller or a phone. Actually, some of the robots didn’t even need a controller — you could just wave with your hand, and then the robot would move.

At the exhibition, there was something for all ages. There was even a robot theatre for the smaller children, with music and dancing robots. I think it is a good exhibition, especially if you like robots and new technology. Even if you think you have seen it all, some of the robots at the exhibition will impress you and show you, how far we are with that type of technology, and how many different types of job these robots have. I really liked the exhibition so I can only recommend it.

In the first 2 pictures, you can see Alyona with the Robot seal PARO from Japan, who is made so you can cuddle with it and pet it, and then he will react by moving or saying sounds. He is made to keep elders in company, when they can’t have a real pet. The reason why it is a seal is because then people can’t compare it to an animal that they haven’t seen in real life. The next 2 pictures show 2 of the robots from the movie WALL-E (WALL-E and EVE). You can also see a robot (which is moving around the hall) pulling a coach with a girl on it. The rest of the photos is just some different types of robots, and me dressed as a Jedi 🙂

The everyday life in Cheboksary — Freja’s blog

After being here almost a month, the days looks more like each other and I know where the different offices are, and I am getting used to the transport around the city… Except the minibuses/shuttlebuses. I haven’t used them much, only when I am going to Novocheboksarsk because I am forced to do it. However, even if I am not using it much I have already tried to take it when it is rush hour. And it is really crowded. Some of the shuttlebuses are filled so much that it barely can close the door. The only practical I can see in this, is that no matter how crazy the driver drives, people won’t fall because they can’t move an inch J. This is quite an advantage for me because I have a bad balance when it comes to stand in the shuttlebuses. However, no matter how many people there is going to Novocheboksarsk, you can catch a car. Then it is just to cross your fingers an hope that the shuttlebus can bring you to your stop, and not just stop in the middle of the two cities… Even when I have only used the shuttlebus a couple of times, I have experienced it. So maybe we should just have taken that cab ;).

Between the different classes, clubs and events, there is also room for some nature experiences, for an examples a walk in the Park Gusovsky, which I would rather call a small forest than a park. But of course, it is small compared to some of the other forests here in Russia, I know. No matter what it is always good with a walk in the nature, especially here in the fall. Then the trees and bushes change almost every week, with new colours. So, I am looking forward to the next walk.

A trip to the amusement park — FREJA’S BLOG:)))

One of the evenings I was going to meet some friends, who had promised me to show me the city. We went from my apartment, walked on Moskovsky prospect where the first stop was the monument “Roza Mira”. I have heard that is a quite new monument, and that they are not finished yet. When you drive/walk by, it is quite fascinating and beautiful. It almost looks like you’re in Rome, or another Italian or Greek city. And if you walk through the big white “gates”, you can see all these sculptures of important women who are ready to fight. Even though the monument is quite beautiful, it’s a shame that there is an empty dirty field, on the other side of the monument. And I know that they are not done yet.

Next stop is the amusement park that is located nearby in a park. I’ve heard that is it quite new, which is also visible if you look at the rides. I really like the concept where it is possible to just by a single ticket to a ride, instead of a buying an expensive ticket for all the rides. That way you can just walk through the park, and maybe try a ride or two, or just enjoy the lightshow that every ride makes. Even though that it was a Wednesday evening, a decent amount of people where in the park, to try the rides.

This ended up being one more nice evening here in Cheboksary, and I am looking forward to more of them.

Some experiences in a new city — FREJA’S BLOG:)))

I now have been in Cheboksary in a week, and no days have been the same. Everyday, on my way to work, I see new things like new statues, shops and parks. Yesterday I was told that there was a chocolatier in the same building as the office I was staying. Furthermore, I was told that it used to be a very famous chocolatier because it was the only one of its kind, and people came to Cheboksary only to visit this shop. Unfortunately, they builded more shops just like this in different cities, so it isn’t as popular as it used to be. I was curious, so I went downstairs to see the shop. I have never in my life seen such a shop before, and I have been to different candy shops, chocolate shops and so on, before. The way they had all their types of biscuits and chocolate in showcases, so you couldn’t touch it; they even lock the ice cream freezer, so you can’t take one by yourself. It was like going into a jewelry store, where they lock down all their jewels, so nobody can steal it. So that was quite an experience, just going to a chocolatier.

Yesterday was the first time I took the bus, and it feels like I have never tried it before in my life, because I don’t understand a dime of what is going on. I learned to never ask (in English) if I am on the right bus, to the lady who collects money from the passengers. Because then she will make it sound like your on the totally wrong bus in the wrong direction. Fortunately, people helped me and showed me the way, even if we could not communicate so well. So it was not a totally successful first bus ride here in Cheboksary, but I arrived at my destination so that was great.

Everyday I am still trying to learn more about the city, and the people living in it, because it is interesting to learn more about a new country and of course a new city.

My first days in Cheboksary — Freja’s blog:)))

Hi! My name is Freja, I am form Danmark and I’m a volunteer at Sodrujestvo. I am going to use the next 3 months in Cheboksary, where I am going to have speaking clubs, participate in the languages festival and many other interesting activities. I am very excited to learn more about the Russian culture, the language and the people living in Russia, because it’s my first time in the country. Often when you haven’t visited a country yet, the only thing you know about it, is what you hear around. And when people are talking about Russia, they are stereotyping the Russian people like they only drink vodka and all have a bear as a pet ;-). But right now the people I have met are nice people, who all welcomes you and tries to understand you, even when you are speaking a different language.

I have been showed around the city, and it is very beautiful. I like the monuments, the gardens and the riverside of Volga. But it is difficult to navigate through the city, because everything is in either Russian or Chuvash, and not everyone can understand and/or talk English. So I am starting to learn a little Russian, but it is really hard, because I first of all need to learn a new alphabet. But if you can learn English or another foreign language, I can learn Russian.

When you walk down the streets, the people you see are almost similar to the people you see when you are walking down the streets in Denmark. One of the biggest difference is that you don’t understand what people are saying, and you cannot read any of the signs. Luckily, some words are similar to either Danish or English, but it is still hard.

I am going to write a little bit once in a while, while I am staying here in Cheboksary, about the way I experience my time here. So I look forward to learn more about the city and the people living here.
